Maine Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network

The Maine AHEC Network has been working since 1985 to address health professional workforce shortages, especially for primary care providers, in Maine’s rural and underserved areas.  AHEC supports that effort by working with academic and community partners to:

  • Provide rural, community-based clinical training experiences for medical and other health professions' students
  • Encourage Maine youth to explore health careers at www.MaineHealthCareers.com and through camps, field trips, and other learning opportunities
  • Support practicing health professionals with continuing education and distance learning opportunities

Today, the Maine AHEC Network consists of a Program Office at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford and three AHEC Centers—Acadia Health Education Coalition AHEC in Bangor, Franklin Community Health Network AHEC in Farmington, and Maine Center for Public Health AHEC in Augusta.

The Maine AHEC Network is supported by funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), UNECOM, the Finance Authority of Maine, and the Maine Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (Maine Center for Disease Control).
