Clinical Clerkship Requirements


CORE ROTATIONS are completed in the third year.  The student selects a  Clinical Training Center from the schedule set by the Office of Clinical Education.

    pediatric
  • 12 weeks Internal Medicine
  • 6 weeks Surgery
  • 6 weeks Pediatrics
  • 6 weeks Obstetrics/Gynecology
  • 6 weeks Family Practice
  • 6 weeks Psychiatry


SELECTIVE ROTATIONS may be completed in the third or fourth year as outlined in the clinical training manual. The student selects training sites with approval by the Office of Clinical Education:

  • 4 weeks Internal Medicine
  • 4 weeks Surgery
  • 4 weeks Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
  • 4 weeks Emergency Medicine
  • 4 weeks Rural Medicine and Community Health. All training sites are located in Maine and are affiliate training sites of the Maine Area Health Education Center Network.


ELECTIVE ROTATIONS may be completed in the third or fourth year as outlined in the clinical training manual.  The student selects disciplines and training sites with approval by the Office of Clinical Education:  18 weeks

  • Students may schedule international electives
  • Research electives are encouraged

There are 80 weeks of required rotations plus Colloquium in the third and fourth years.  Also included are several weeks of  “free time,” which the student may schedule as extra-credit rotations or to meet short-term, personal obligations requiring absence from rotations (e.g., boards preparation, residency interviews, vacation, etc.).  A typical schedule might appear as follows:
