Online Medical General Chemistry I
Online Medical General Chemistry I is equivalent to a one semester course with a laboratory designed for individuals with a baccalaureate degree who need first semester general chemistry as a prerequisite to apply for admission to health professions' programs. These may include graduate programs in medicine, veterinary medicine, dental medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant.
To give the student interested in the health professions an introduction to general chemistry emphasizing the concepts that will be important for and provide the basis for the subjects the student will encounter in his/her future studies. These subjects covered in this course include components of matter, atomic theory, stoichiometry, chemical reactions and bonding, thermochemistry, gases, quantum theory, electron configuration, models of bonding, theories of covalent bonding, shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces of liquids, and solids.
The course is designed to take lecture and lab concurrently for four credits. However, you have the option to take lecture only (three credits) or lab only (one credit). You need to specify during registration that you want to take lab only or lecture only, otherwise it will be assumed that you want to take both. Please contact COM distance for cost at 602-2494.
The typical student will complete the course in approximately 16 weeks. Students may enroll at any time. Many students are nontraditional students who have elected an on-line course for it's flexibility. Therefore, students may complete the course in less than 16 weeks. Extensions beyond 16 weeks (not to exceed 35 weeks) may be granted by the course instructor. Prerequisite(s): College level algebra (must have been successfully completed within the past 7 years).
Note: The cost of the Lab Paq is not included in the laboratory fee and must be purchased by the student directly from the supplier, Hands-On Labs Inc. The website address is www.labpaq.com.
