Online Microbiology for Health Professions
This course is designed to meet the microbiology prerequisite for students who are applying for admission to health profession programs. Most students taking this course will have an undergraduate degree and will be in the process of a career change. Online Microbiology is a one-semester course with a virtual laboratory. It will emphasize the concepts that are a necessary groundwork for courses the student will take in his/her professional studies.
Topics covered in this course include: the history of microbiology, microbial morphology and physiology, bacterial metabolism, genetics, and ecology, and the classification microorganisms. The course will emphasize medically important Eubacteria and protists. The virtual laboratory provides a review of procedures used to isolate and identify microorganisms, including biochemical tests, molecular biology, and serological techniques. VirtualUnknown Microbiology can be previewed at www.intuitiveinc.com.
The course is designed to take lecture and lab concurrently for four credits. However, you have the option to take lecture only (three credits). You need to specify during registration that you want to take the 4-credit lecture and lab course, or the 3-credit lecture only, otherwise it will be assumed that you want to take both. Please contact COM distance for cost at 602-2494.
The typical student will complete the course in approximately 16 weeks. Students may enroll at any time. Many students are nontraditional students who have elected an on-line course for it's flexibility. Therefore students may complete the course in less than 16 weeks or they may take up to 8 months. In extraordinary circumstances, extensions beyond 8 months may be granted by the instructor. Prerequisite(s): College level introductory biology.
