Online Medical Terminology

This online course is a one semester, 3-credit hour designed to cover the length of a normal semester of 16 weeks. Students may complete the course in less than 16 weeks. It is traditionally designed for students who need Medical Terminology to fulfill an admissions requirement to a health professions program.  These may include, but not limited to; graduate programs in Physician Assistant (PA), Dietetics, Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nurse Anesthesia, Veterinary Medicine, Podiatric Medicine, Chiropractic, and Physical Therapy.  This course will also fulfill any other student who needs an in-depth course in the "language of medicine" such as those pursuing careers in Health Care Administration or health-related fields.

The overall goal of this course is to provide the student interested in health care, health care delivery, or graduate study in some aspect of medicine or health care a broad and comprehensive understanding of the unique language of medical terminology.  Regardless of what area of medicine or health care one is interested in working in or pursuing graduate school in, it is essential to have a working knowledge of the terminology of medicine.   Medical record documentation, consultation with colleagues,  billing and coding, as well as foundational understanding of the terms, roots, and concepts of diseases, therapies, pharmacology, pathological process', and structure and function are basic to grasping more advanced basic science and clinical science.

In order to accomplish the goal of mastering the vocabulary, terms, word-building, and derivation skills of the many specialties of medical practice; a systematic approach will be applied.  There are 16 modules which begin with basic "combining forms" recurrent suffixes and prefixes used in medical language and each module add an additional area of medicine learning:  structure, function, pathology, diseases, diagnostics, and therapeutics while building on previous vocabulary and concepts.  This course is both vocabulary and word building, as well as conceptual in teaching both language and theory.

All course material is web-based including online streaming of audio-video lectures, learning objectives, homework, and quiz assessment after each module.  Blackboard is the tool utilized to deliver the virtual classroom.  Examinations can be taken via Proctor-U online or on the UNE campus.

Working at a typical pace, the course is designed to be completed in 16 weeks as in a normal semester.  The virtual classroom and online use of technology allows flexibility to the student who wishes to complete the course quicker or slower depending on personal needs.  The course is taught by one professor who is also a physician with many years of clinical and academic experience making the course beneficial and practical for students interested in medicine or in need of a course in Medical Terminology for further study.
