Student and Alumni Profiles

The following comments and profiles are from students and alumni of the University of New England's Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Public Health.

Students and alumni of the public health program like the knowledgeable faculty, the rigor of the courses, the convenience of the distance learning format and the opportunities for advancement that their graduate study in public health has made possible.

Carol Eckert, M.D., M.P.H., '07, family doctor in a rural health center in central Maine: "I hope to incorporate my new knowledge into my daily practice of medicine - a lot of clinical people get MPH’s to do just this. I think this program is a real boon to the osteopathic students at UNE - being able to work on both degrees at once will subtly shift their focus to prevention." Profile.

Robin A. Mayo, R.N., CAGS Public Health '04, Community Partnership Director, Piscataquis Public Health Council, Mayo Regional Hospital: "I especially liked the ability to do course work through distance learning because it was impossible for me to travel down to Portland or Biddeford two or three nights a week, a 3-½ hour drive one-way." Profile.

Tom Patenaude, B.S., CAGS Public Health '04, Hospital Bioterrorism Coordinator, Office of Public, Health Emergency Preparedness, Maine Bureau of Health: "I also would not have my job here at the Maine Bureau of Health if it had not been for my emergency management training and the public health certificate program. … The public health concepts I have learned are applicable daily. There isn't a day that goes by that I am not applying the principles and theories that I learned from this program." Profile.

Kristine Perkins, A.A.S., CAGS Public Health '04, Public Health Educator/School Oral Health Program AdministratorDivision of Community Health, Maine Bureau of Health
Maine Department of Health and Human Services: "Overall, I think the quality of the training at UNE that I received was phenomenal. It has made an enormous difference in the way I approach my work, the way I perceive things, the way I look at things, the way I have been able to administer the work I do here with the folks I oversee."
