Residents enter the sub-specialty residency following successful completion of a two-year Family Practice residency program approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP).

UNE’s one-year geriatric sub-specialty program emphasizes clinical skills acquisition in geriatrics as well as the development of administrative and teaching skills.  Special emphasis is placed on long-term and end-of-life care.  MatureCare, a division of University Health Care and the largest geriatric care group in Maine, allows the program to offer a practical exposure to the special needs of this population both in care management and in practice management.  Community-based specialty practitioners complement geriatric experiences in long-term care, acute care and ambulatory settings to provide a well-rounded program.

A value-added aspect of the training program is the inclusion of introductory modules that are part of the requirements for American Medical Directors Association certification.  Upon successful completion of the UNE geriatric sub-specialty program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) Geriatric Medicine Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) examination.
