Flag Football

Malpractice, UNECOM's only MS-II representation in the Women's Intramural Flag Football League, kicked off the season on Wednesday, October 8th against undergraduate team Yonis.  Although the MS-II's were held scoreless in their season opener, they looked strong and showed promise of fierce competition.  In their second game against the MS-I Buccinators, the ladies showed improvement by scoring a defensive touchdown and making several sacks.

"It's fun to get out there and mix it up," commented Malpractice player Alanna Burke.  The team agrees, it's one heck of a stress reliever from the rigors of studying.  "There's just something about the combination of team spirit and sport that makes it worthwhile," stated MS-II Wendy Ziegler.

Come show your support as the MS-II Women's team fights for a spot in the playoffs.  As Coach Christie Silver put it, "The team that plays together, wins together."  And there you have it.

SGA Guidelines for funding Clubs and Organizations

In order to be an active club/organization on this campus that can receive money from the SGA, a club must be financially responsible for itself.  This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining a school account with a positive balance.

According to Appendix 2 of the SGA Handbook, monetary disbursements are made to clubs "equal to 25% of the previous year's SGA budget as derived from activity fees, to be split evenly among the enrolled organizations and made in two disbursements."  This means that clubs can expect to receive about $150 in two installments of $75 at some point in time this year.  Because all clubs and organizations fall under the umbrella of SGA, a club must be deemed financially responsible before it can receive these disbursements.  The requirements for this are described in general terms in the SGA Handbook.

Clubs may also petition the SGA Financial Committee for additional funding of single events during the course of the year. At the August 20, 2003 SGA meeting, a motion was passed detailing and clarifying the procedure that Clubs and Organizations must follow in order to request additional funding from the SGA.

A full statement of the policy can be found at: http://pipeline.une.edu/cp/tn/fs on the clubs and organizations group page.

The Art and Artistry of Arthur Szyk  has opened at the UNE Art Gallery, WCC and will continue through November 2, 2003. University Health Care now has a new website!

University Health Care is a community service of the University of New England (UNE) and its College of Osteopathic Medicine. We offer comprehensive health care for patients of all ages in 12 convenient locations.

Several ways to reach the site are by clicking on the medical school’s highlight photo on the UNE home page, from.the Current Students portal, from the Faculty and Staff portal, from the Parents portal or the UNE sitemap under "Administrative Offices”.

UNE Provides Student Mentoring Services in Biddeford

UNE has recently become a collaborating partner with the Northern York County YMCA and the Biddeford schools to provide mentoring and other skills-development programs to Biddeford school children. The Y and the school system established the partnership last spring, creating the 21st Century Community Learning Center. President Featherman commented on this collaboration stating, “UNE is deeply committed to partnering with the Biddeford schools and YMCA to provide mentoring services to Biddeford students. The city of Biddeford has been very supportive of the University of New England. We are happy, in turn, to have our students offering mentoring and other skills-development programs to the children of Biddeford.” The collaboration stems from the national No Child Left Behind Legislation, which provides additional activities to enrich academic development. Biddeford school students kindergarten through eighth grade will benefit from the 21st Century Community Learning Center. YMCA Program Curriculum Coordinator Sue Ellen Whitmore stated, “My hope for the 21st Century Community Learning Center is that through the power of caring, engaged adults, children will fully explore their capabilities, and will experience a brighter future. Together, we can make a difference.”  The 21st Century Community Learning Center staff and collaborating organizations are creating an out-of-school-time program to further the academic, enrichment, recreational, and family literacy opportunities for students at Biddeford Primary, John F. Kennedy and Biddeford Middle Schools. The program will provide organizational skills development, academic mentoring and tutoring services, friendship skills development, performing arts activities, non-competitive games and more. UNE students will serve as mentors to individual Biddeford school students or a group of students. This campus-wide service learning opportunity aligns with the University’s core curriculum emphasis on the importance of citizenship and civic responsibility. The mentors will be asked to dedicate one afternoon a week to the out-of-school-time program.  In addition, UNE students have the opportunity to become assistant teachers. UNE faculty may provide in-service presentations to the Center’s staff.

Request for Assistance

Allen L. Bell, Ph.D., Anatomy Dept. COM, is attempting to find an airplane pilot within the UNE Community. The reason a pilot is needed is that the University needs some new aerial photographs of the campus. Many of the photos we now have were taken a number of years ago. Many of them were very good and that served the University's purposes for a while.

With all the physical changes that have taken place since then, we really should get some new aerial photos. Steve Price has asked Allen to take some photos and he needs a way to get in the air to do that.  It is also important to do it before all of the leaves fall. So if you are a pilot and would be interested in participating in this endeavor, please contact Allen at extension 2209 or abell@une.edu.  The University will pay for all Rental charges for the plane.

UNE Band

All faculty, staff & students are invited to join the UNE Band. All levels of skill are welcomed.  If you would like more information, please contact Amy Wollstadt at awollstadt@pipeline.une.edu

Carrie Bogue x. 2674,  Ellen Parsons, x 2271 or 2371, Glen-Ellen Roth, x. 2258 or Sally Witham x 2524.
