Maine, as well as the region, faces a crisis in oral health. All of Maine’s 16 counties currently have dental health professional shortages. Because 41 percent of Maine dentists are 55 or older, this shortage will increase in the coming decades without a plan to meet that shortage. More on the oral health crisis.
In keeping with the University of New England’s role as a regional leader in health professions education, the UNE Board of Trustees voted in 2010 to approve the launching of Maine's first College of Dental Medicine.
