Open House

You are cordially invited by the Division of Student Affairs to join us for our Annual Family and Friends Weekend taking place between Friday, September 25 and Sunday, September 27. A University tradition, Family and Friends Weekend is designed to welcome our extended UNE family back to campus, providing an opportunity to observe and participate in the life of our vibrant community.

Family and Friends Weekend showcases all aspects of the University with events that include academic presentations; athletic competitions; musical and "unique" entertainment; outdoor recreation opportunities; delicious seasonal food and much more!

2014 Schedule of Events

Please note events highlighted as "signature events" feature the involvement of our accomplished faculty and staff.


Early Registration
5pm-8pm, Campus Center Lobby 
Upon arrival, visit us at the Campus Center Lobby to collect a schedule for the weekend, register for events, and enter into various raffles.

Open Skate
7:30pm-9:30pm, Alfond Forum Ice Rink
Lace up your skates and enjoy an evening of skating.  Warm up with some hot chocolate and cookies. A limited number of skate rentals are available on a first come first serve basis.

Southern Maine Open Mic Night 
8:30pm- 10:30pm, Campus Center Hang
Southern Maine Open Mic Night, a student favorite, will feature some of UNE’s very own artists, including UNE TABS and Storm Surge!  Family and friends are welcome to bring along their musical instruments and talents, and join us on stage for this Family and Friends Weekend Tradition.


8:30am- 2pm, Campus Center Lobby
Upon arrival, visit us at the Campus Center Lobby to collect a schedule for the weekend and register for events.

Signature Event: Welcome Coffee hosted by the Dean of Students
9:00am-11:30am, Campus Center Multipurpose Rooms
Mark Nahorney, Dean of Students, invites you to enjoy a cup of coffee while visiting with members of the Student Affairs Division.

Student Symposium
8:30am-12:00pm, Alfond Health Science Center
Please join us as our Summer Undergraduate Research Students showcase their research accomplishments. Posters are available for viewing on the 1st and 2nd floors. Oral presentations will be held in Room 106, from10:30am to 12:00pm.

River Tour 
9:00 a.m.– 10:30 a.m., Boat House 
This leisurely ride will allow you to see the University grounds and the Saco and Biddeford area from a different perspective. There will be lots of opportunity to hear the history of this area and view the river’s wildlife. Limited sign-up in advance through University Tickets.

UNE Bookstore Open
9am-4pm, Campus Center

Craft Fair
10am-3pm, Campus Center Gym
UNE students, staff, and community artisans will present crafts produced with a number of different materials for your purchase.  Jewelry, paper products, baked goods, knitted items, photo prints, home goods and more!  

Saco River, Kayak Excursion  
10am - 1pm, Boat House
A great way to get out and explore the beautiful Saco River and see campus from a different perspective though this guided kayak trip. Your trip will start with a motorboat ride up the Saco River, while hearing about the history of the local area. Limited sign-up in advance through University Tickets.

Signature Event:  Environmental Studies Wilderness Tour/ with Professor Noah Perlut
10:30am-11:30am Departs from the Admissions Welcome Cottage
Dr. Noah Perlut’s class, Advanced Field Methods in Avian Ecology and Conservation, runs a fall migration bird banding station in the UNE 363 woods.  For this Event, Dr. Perlut will open mist nets and present a songbird banding demonstration.  Visitors will have the chance to assist with banding and see these fascinating animals up close.

Representatives from the Photography Club will be on hand to help you capture your Family and Friends Weekend memories.

Stop by to get your very own one of a kind Henna Tattoo!

Make your own Herb Garden   
10:30am-2:30pm, Campus Center Gym 
We will provide you with all the supplies to create your very own Herb Garden.  Green thumb not necessary!

Photo Tiles  
10:30am-2pm, Campus Center Gym
Gather up your family for a photo that will be turned into a ceramic tile.  A great keepsake from the weekend!

11am-1pm, Decary Upper Cafeteria
$7.00 for non UNE Students.

Signature Event: James Sulikowski 
2:00pm - 3:00pm Marine Science Center
Join Dr. James Sulikowski, Professor of Marine Science and Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, as he explains the movements and habitat use of Atlantic sturgeon in the Saco River. James will also showcase how the contributions of our motivated students are advancing our understanding of the ecology of marine fishes. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Marine Science Center and will get a first hand experience at the touch tanks with sturgeon, skates, and local invertebrates.​

3pm-5pm Campus Center Pool
Join the Scuba Club for this in water introduction to Scuba Diving in the Campus Center Pool. Learn the basics of scuba, and get into the pool with your friends and family for this fun adventure. All equipment is provided, just bring your swim suit.  Registration required in advance.

Lobster Dinner
4:30pm- 6:30pm, Decary Upper Cafeteria
Enjoy a classic Maine feast! Join us for the “Maine Course” in our dining hall; a dinner of fresh Maine lobster with all the necessary accoutrements.  For those who do not enjoy shellfish, other menu items will be available so don’t miss out.  As it is necessary for us to place a special order for the lobsters with our vendor, please be aware that we are unable to accept registration for this event past 5pm on Monday, October 13th. 

Warming Fire and S’mores
6:30pm-8pm, Peacegrove/Kiosk                                                                        
Enjoy hot apple cider and make your own S’mores while making new friends!  Weather permitting.

Activities Programming Board Presents: Mark Hayward
7pm & 8pm shows, Campus Center Multipurpose Rooms
Mark’s performance consists of an amusing combination of comedy and object manipulation.  He uses props such as yo-yos, tops and juggling equipment, as well as nontraditional performing props like a mousetrap (and even a wombat trap!), in a fun and witty style for a show that can be enjoyed by anyone.

Activities Programming Board Casino
7pm-9pm, Campus Center Gym
Try your luck at our mock casino, where you can win one of nearly a $1000 in prizes! Don’t worry about bringing your front money; we’ll supply you with the chips necessary for play. Prizes will be drawn at9:30pm.  Hors d’oeuvres, a chocolate fountain, and a mash potato bar will bring the taste of Vegas to this fun night!

Activities Programming Board Bingo
7pm-9pm, Alfond 106 & 205
Maybe table games aren’t your thing; no worries!  We’ve got prizes galore for those who join us for Bingo! Don’t forget to stop by the Campus Center when you’re done for hors d’oeuvres, mashed potato bar and the chocolate fountain!


Fitness Walk/Run/Bike
8am-10am, Campus Center
Get out and stretch your legs!  Enjoy some fresh air along our beautiful coastal location on foot or by bike.  Local maps with designated running and walking loops will be made available, as well as bikes for rent.  

Caribbean Breakfast 
9am-11am, Decary Cafeteria
Begin your last day on campus with the enjoyable sounds of the Duquette Quartet and a simply scrumptious breakfast.  Cost is $8 for non UNE Students.

Don’t leave campus without some locally grown produce or handmade baked goods and household items!  Stop by UNE’s very own farmers market, brought to you by Earth's Eco Student Organization and the Activities Programming Board.​
