The Division of Student Affairs cordially invites you to join us for our Annual Family and Friends Weekend taking place Friday, September 25th through Sunday September 27th. A UNE tradition, Family and Friends Weekend is designed to welcome our extended UNE family back to campus, providing an opportunity to observe and participate in our vibrant community. 

Family and Friends Weekend showcases all aspects of the University with events that include academic presentations, athletics competitions, delicious seasonal food, as well as a variety of entertainment and outdoor recreation opportunities. 

Please join your student for the fun and memory-making that marks our Family and Friends Weekend. Learn with us. Laugh with us. Celebrate with us!

Schedule of Events

Schedule subject to change, check back frequently for more information. Some events require preregistration. Registration will begin on September 1, and continue until the event has sold out. 

FRIDAY, September 25​

Early Registration
5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Alfond Forum Lobby
Upon arrival, visit us at the Alfond Forum Lobby to collect a schedule for the weekend, get information, and register for events.

Skate with a Nor’Easter 
7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Alfond Forum Ice Rink
Lace up your skates and enjoy an evening of skating with members of the UNE Hockey teams.  Warm up with some hot chocolate and cookies. A limited number of skate rentals are available on a first come first serve basis.

Southern Maine Open Mic Night
8:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m., Campus Center Hang
Southern Maine Open Mic Night, a student favorite, will feature some of UNE’s very own artists, including UNE TABS and Storm Surge! Family and friends are welcome to bring along their musical instruments and talents, and join us on stage for this Family and Friends Weekend Tradition. 

SATURDAY, September 26

Registration

Upon arrival, visit us at the Campus Center Lobby to collect a schedule for the weekend and register for events.

Signature Event: SURE Research Symposium
9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Poster Presentations & Welcome Coffee, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Oral Presentations, Alfond Center for Health Sciences
Please join us as our Summer Undergraduate Research Students showcase their research accomplishments. Posters are available for viewing on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Oral presentations will be held in Room 106.

River Tour

This leisurely ride will allow you to see the University grounds and the Saco and Biddeford area from a different perspective. There will be lots of opportunity to hear the history of this area and view the river’s wildlife. Limited sign-up in advance through University Tickets.

Craft Fair
10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Campus Center Gym
UNE students, staff, and community artisans will present crafts produced with a number of different materials for your purchase. Jewelry, paper products, baked goods, knitted items, photo prints, home goods and more! The Craft Fair will also include a variety of activities for the whole family.

Signature Event: Dr. James Sulikowski
10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Alfond Center Rm 304
Join Dr. James Sulikowski, Professor of Marine Science, for a discussion on the mysteries and myths of sharks and the research he conducts on this charismatic group of fish. Dr. Sulikowski will also showcase how the contributions of our motivated students are advancing our understanding of the ecology of marine fishes. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Marine Science Center and will get a first hand experience at the touch tanks with sturgeon, skates and local invertebrates.

First Generation Panel

 Discuss the rewards and challenges of being a first generation college student with a variety of UNE administrators.

Combining original mind blowing magic and a heavy dose of humor is his secret to success and why he was recently showcased on national TV, where he performed for the CW Network's hit show, Penn & Teller Fool Us.

Scubapooloza
3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Campus Center Pool
Join the Scuba Club for this in water introduction to Scuba Diving in the Campus Center Pool. Learn the basics of scuba, and get into the pool with your friends and family for this fun adventure. All equipment is provided; just bring your swim suit. Registration required in advance.

Join President Ripich and other UNE administrators for an afternoon of Jazz music and lively conversation. Light appetizers will be served.

Lobster Dinner
4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Riverview Facility. Rain Location Decary Hall Upper Cafe
Enjoy a classic Maine feast! Join us for the “Maine Course”, a dinner of fresh Maine lobster with all the necessary accoutrements.  Sides include Maine mussels, tossed salad, potato salad or coleslaw, strawberry shortcake, watermelon, with a variety of iced beverages. For those who do not enjoy shellfish, sirloin steak or half chickens will be available so don’t miss out. Purchase your tickets here!

Warming Fire and S’mores
6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., Peacegrove/Kiosk                                                                        
Enjoy hot apple cider and make your own S’mores while making new friends!  Weather permitting.

Red Sox Pub in the Hang
7:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m., Campus Center
Enjoy an evening with the Red Sox as they battle the Orioles in late September action. 

Signature Event: Old Las Vegas, sponsored by Activities Programming Board

Try your luck at our mock casino, where you can win one of nearly a $1000 in prizes, and dance the night away with live music! Don’t worry about bringing your front money; we’ll supply you with the chips necessary for play. Prizes will be drawn at 10:15pm.  Hors d’oeuvres, and a mashed potato bar will bring the taste of Vegas to this fun night!

Fitness Walk/Run/Bike

Get out and stretch your legs! Enjoy some fresh air along our beautiful coastal location on foot or by bike. Local maps with designated running and walking loops will be made available, as well as bikes for rent.  

Interfaith service

Begin your last day on campus with delicious Maine treats. Maine Maple Syrup and blueberry pancakes are served for your enjoyment. $8 cash or meal plan swipe equivalency.

Known for fresh salads and hearty paninis,

The Windward Café offers organic and local produce as well as local organic bottled soda. With free WiFi and a bright dining and study area, we have become the hotspot on campus where students and staff meet over lunch or dinner to work on group projects, or simply unwind with a Caramel Macchiato. Whether you start or end your day with us, you know it'll be worth it when you're dining at the Windward Café.

The Hang is all about gathering with your roommates and friends to eat good food in a relaxed atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can sit down to watch the big game, play pool or both. We offer weekly specials and a menu composed of all the foods that college students love. With vegetarian options as well as a line of ready-to-go sandwiches, fruit and dessert parfaits, the Hang has something for you. So whether it's an energy drink to get through that long night of studying or a chicken quesadilla to celebrate the exam you aced, we've got what you crave.

The Forum

The Forum is located in the Alfond Forum Athletic Facility and features a Southern Cuisine line where you can create your own fresh burrito, taco or taco salad. Our made-from-scratch meats, rice, beans, salsas and sauces are sure to add a delicious flavor to any meal!

The Grill section provides more of the same fresh ingredients. Our hamburger is made of beef from Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine, and is absolutely amazing! If you prefer, we have a delicious grilled chicken sandwich, veggie burger or hot dog. All can be customized to your liking.

Meal plan swipes can be used Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Nor'easter Dollars and Board Flex are also accepted any time.
