Grants and scholarships are considered "gift aid" that do not require repayment. Some programs may require a term of service by the recipient. Students at the University of New England may receive grants and scholarships from institutional, federal, state, and private sources.
College of Osteopathic Medicine Scholarship
Returning medical students demonstrating exceptional financial need whose application materials are complete by the May 1st deadline are considered for this award until the funds are depleted. There is no payback or service obligation associated with this award. The amount is $1,000 per academic year. Awards are not automatically renewable; students must re-apply each year by the May 1st deadline and applications are re-evaluated for eligibility.
College of Osteopathic Medicine University Scholarships
These donor-sponsored scholarships are awarded to students based on financial need, academic merit and other criteria specified by the particular donor. All current students will be e-mailed an application in February preceeding the academic year. Students who are awarded scholarship funds will be sent a revised award letter during the academic year. Students must apply each year to be considered for funding.
Sewall Osteopathic Foundation Scholarship
Two third-year medical students are chosen to receive $10,000 each during their fourth year. Applicants must be committed to primary care practice in rural areas. Applicants cannot have a conflicting service obligation (such as National Health Service Corps, Armed Forces, or Indian Health Service). Applicants must be in good academic standing. Eligibility is not based on financial need. The scholarship selection committee sends application materials to all students in the eligible UNECOM class in the spring. Applicants must complete an application essay and an interview with the scholarship selection panel.
National Health Service Corps Scholarships
Available to UNECOM students, these competitive scholarships will pay full tuition and required fees for the academic year, a single payment toward other allowable expenses and a monthly stipend ($1,233 before taxes for the 2008-2009 academic year). For each year of scholarship support recipients owe one year of full-time professional practice (two-year service minimum) at mainly rural sites in high-priority health professions shortage areas of the U.S. at facilities approved by the Public Health Service (PHS). Awards are not based on financial need. The application for 2008/2009 is supposed to be available in June 2008. It will be an on-line application, available at the NHSC website or call (800)638-0824.
Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships
Available to medical students, these scholarship programs will pay full tuition, fees, the cost of required textbooks and equipment, and a monthly stipend in exchange for a later active duty service obligation.
