The Financial Aid Process for Graduate Certificate and Master of Public Health Students

1. Complete the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for Federal Stafford Loans for the summer 2008, fall 2008, and spring 2009 semesters. It should only be filed once per year. In order to allow sufficient time for processing, you should file the FAFSA as early as possible prior to the start of your first semester.

You can  apply using FAFSA on the
web. Once you have submitted your FAFSA, allow 2-3 weeks for UNE to electronically receive your data from the federal processing center. Remember to include the University of New England's Title IV Institution Code (002050).

2. Complete the 2008/2009 University of New England Distance Education Financial Aid Application.

The UNE Distance Education Financial Aid Application is required for students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate or Masters of Public Health Program.  The application collects your intended enrollment by semester.

3. Provide Verification Documents (if requested)

Your FAFSA may be selected for verification. This means that we are required to verify the accuracy of some of the items you reported on your FAFSA by reviewing signed copies of your 2007 federal income tax returns, your spouse's 2007 federal income tax returns, copies of your 2007 W-2 forms, and by verifying your household information and any sources of untaxed income. If you are selected for verification, we will send you a request for copies of your 2007 federal income tax returns and W-2's and we will mail you a verification worksheet to complete.

3. Review your Award Letter from UNE

As soon as your financial aid application materials are complete, and we have determined your eligibility for financial aid, you will receive your financial aid award letter. Your award letter will provide your maximum eligibility for the Stafford Loan programs each semester.

You will not need to return the award letter to the Financial Aid Office unless:

  • You wish to decline some or all of your financial aid or
  • You are reporting a change in your expected enrollment status or
  • You are reporting the receipt of external assistance (such as tuition reimbursement through your employer).
4. Complete your Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (new borrowers only)

If this will be your first year borrowing a Federal Stafford Loan at the University of New England, you are required to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the Federal Direct Loan Program before your loan funds can  disburse. You will only need to complete this Note once (for up to 10 years), unless you change lenders. Once you complete MPN your loan funds will  disburse to your student account no earlier than three weeks after the start of classes each semester.
