Entrance Interviews for Student Loan Borrowers
(For students who are starting a program at the University)

First-time borrowers of the Federal Stafford Loan at the University of New England are required to complete a student loan entrance interview before they can receive their loan proceeds. The purpose of the entrance interview is to provide the student with important information regarding their rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. Entrance interviews are scheduled as part of required orientation sessions; students who cannot attend a scheduled session also have the option of completing the
entrance interview online by clicking here.  Under the state, select Maine, then University of New England and then undergradute or graduate.  If you are starting a program at UNE, make sure to select Entrance Exam.  This option is recommended for students enrolled in the Master of Science in Education and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership programs.

Exit Interviews for Student Loan Borrowers
( For students who are leaving or graduating from the University, or are enrolled less than half time)

Students who have borrowed Federal Stafford Loans while attending the University of New England must complete a student loan exit interview prior to leaving the University. The purpose of the exit interview is to provide the student with important information regarding loan repayment, including deferments, grace periods, loan consolidation, and loan default. Exit interview sessions are scheduled toward the end of each semester, and upcoming graduates are notified of these sessions. Students who cannot attend the scheduled sessions also have the option of completing the
exit interview online by clicking here.  Under the state, select Maine, then University of New England and then undergradute or graduate.  If you are leaving a program at UNE, make sure to select Exit Exam.  This option is recommended for students enrolled in the Master of Science in Education and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership programs.

Students who have borrowed through the Federal Perkins Loan and / or Nursing Student Loan programs will also be required to complete additional exit interview paperwork with the University Collections Office prior to leaving the University.


Student Loan History

Students may access their Title IV student loan history by registering with the Department of Education. Students must have a PIN in order to view their information. A PIN is available through one of the following ways:

  • students who previously filed their FAFSA on-line will have a PIN mailed to them in late fall so that they may access their renewal FAFSA on-line to apply for the next academic year.
  • students may request a PIN be mailed to them by registering at National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).

Once you have received your PIN, you may log in to NSLDS and view the status of your Federal Student Loans as well as the aggregate total of loan debt to date.

U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Loan Ombudsmen

The U.S. Department of Education has established the Student Financial Aid Ombudsman to assist federal student loan borrowers. The Ombudsman works informally to help borrowers resolve loan disputes and problems. The Ombudsman Customer Service Line is 1-877-557-2575. The Ombudsman assists borrowers of the following federal loans:

  • Federal Perkins Loans
  • Federal Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized)
  • Federal PLUS Loans
  • Guaranteed Student Loans
  • Supplemental Loans to Students (SLS)
  • Federal Consolidation Loans
