Grants and Scholarships for Undergraduate Students


Grants and Scholarships are considered "gift aid" that do not require repayment. Some programs may require a term of service by the recipient. Students at the University of New England may receive grants and scholarships from institutional, federal, state, and private sources.

University of New England Scholarship
Awards are made by the Office of Admissions to incoming undergraduate students with exceptional academic credentials and are renewable, based on continuing academic performance. Award amounts vary and are not based on financial need. The student does not have to apply for financial aid to be considered for this program. The student must be enrolled full time (12 or more credits) per semester in order to qualify for this award.  Recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher to continue to receive this scholarship for up to four years of undergraduate study.

University of New England Dental Hygiene Scholarship
Academic scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office to full time dental hygiene students.  Award amounts are based on the student's academic credentials at the time of admission and are not based on the student's financial need.  Recipients must be enrolled as full time undergraduates at UNE and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher to continue to receive this scholarship for up to four years of undergraduate study.  These awards are not available to incoming students.

University of New England Nursing Scholarship
Academic scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office to undergraduate nursing students.  Award amounts are based on the student's academic credentials at the time of admission and are not based on the student's financial need.  Recipients must be enrolled as full time undergraduates at UNE and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher to continue to receive this scholarship for up to four years of undergraduate study.   These awards are not available to incoming students.

University of New England Departmental Award
Awards are made by the Office of Admissions to incoming undergraduate students (effective for students entering fall of 2005) with exceptional academic credentials and are renewable, based on continuing academic performance. Award amounts vary and are not based on financial need. The student does not have to apply for financial aid to be considered for this program. The student must be full time to qualify.

U-Lead Scholarship
One-year scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office to qualified full time, first year students demonstrating the potential for involvement in the University Community.  Click here for additional information and application requirements.  The priority consideration deadline for this application is March 15, 2008.  Applications accepted after this date will be considered on a funds available basis.

Diversity Scholarship
Scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office to full time, first time students, based on their ability to contribute to the diversity of the UNE community.  Click here for additional information and requirements.  The priority consideration deadline for this application is March 15, 2008.  Applications received after this date will be considered on a funds available basis.

UNE Endowed Scholarships and UNE Annual Fund Scholarships
Scholarships made possible by individual donors to UNE.  Award criteria will vary based on the individual donor's preferences.  In most cases, awards to students are made on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Sibling Grant
Grants awarded to full time undergraduate students who have a sibling who will be concurrently enrolled as a full time undergraduate student at UNE.  Both students must be enrolled full time in order to receive the grant.

Legacy Grant
Grants awarded to full time undergraduate students whose parent is an alumnus of University of New England, Westbrook College, or Saint Francis College.

University of New England Access Grant
Available to undergraduate students based on financial need. Awards are not automatically renewable; students should have all of their application materials complete by the May 1st priority deadline each year in order to be considered.

Resident Assistant Stipend
Available to any student who has lived in the residence halls for at least one year and who has been chosen to serve as a resident assistant for the academic year. Applications are available from the Department of Residence Life. Award amounts are determined each year by the Department of Residence Life.

CIC Tuition Exchange Program
The CIC Tuition Exchange Program is a benefit provided to the dependents of staff and faculty of participating CIC colleges and universities, who wish to be admitted to an undergraduate program at UNE. Students accepted by UNE for admission into the CIC program will receive a full tuition waiver for up to 4 years of undergraduate study, with the following conditions:

  • Each year the student must complete a renewal CIC application from their parents' home institution.
  • Each year the student and parent must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit all required application materials to the Financial Aid Office.
  • Upon acceptance into the CIC Tuition Exchange Program, the student will be ineligible for any institutionally-funded grants and scholarships.
  • Students participating in the CIC Tuition Exchange Program are required to live on campus.
  • Parents who wish to apply for this benefit should contact their institution's Human Resource Office or CIC Liaison for additional information.

Federal Pell Grant
Awarded to undergraduate students who do not have a baccalaureate degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. There is limited eligibility for students enrolled less than half time. Award amounts for the 2006-2007 academic year range from $400 to $4050.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
Grants awarded  to full time Federal Pell Grant recipients who are U.S. citizens and who have completed a rigorous high school curriculum.  Only students in the first or second year of their academic program are eligible to be considered for these grants.

National SMART Grant
Grants awarded to full time Federal Pell Grant recipients who are U.S. citizens, are enrolled in the third or fourth year of their academic program at UNE, and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.  Eligibility is limited to students enrolled in the following majors:  Biological Sciences, Medical Biology, Biochemistry, Mathematics, Chemistry, Marine Biology, and Aquaculture and Aquarium Science.


Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
Awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need who have not earned their first baccalaureate degree. Award amounts range from $200 to $1,000. Students should have all of their application materials complete by the May 1st priority deadline in order to be considered.

Maine State Grant
This need-based state grant program is awarded to undergraduate students who are Maine residents and who have not earned their first baccalaureate degree. In order to be considered for this program, the Federal Processor must receive the student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than May 1st prior to the start of the academic year. The University of New England will receive a roster of eligible students during the fall and spring semesters and will make awards based on full time status and part time status.

Other State Grant Programs
In addition to Maine, several other states fund grant programs for undergraduate students from their state who are attending the University of New England. Funding is usually based on exceptional financial need, intended enrollment status, and the completion of all application materials by a set deadline (refer to the FAFSA for information on specific state deadlines). Students should check with their state for specific program requirements. States that have funded a state grant program for students at the University of New England include New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
