The Pickus Center
and Its Funding
To attract and keep the kind of research scientists we want, we have committed to building a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility on the Biddeford campus.

The Pickus Center for Biomedical Research is under construction near the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences and Stella Maris Hall (view the slideshow above). The facility will be built in phases.
Upon completion, the building is planned to house 10 research teams of principal investigators, student researchers and trainees.

This is a UNECOM project for the benefit of our medical school and our profession, in New England and beyond.
Attracting Top-flight Faculty
The new research facility will ensure that UNECOM will attract and keep a top-flight faculty that is dedicated to medical education and advancing the practice of medicine, while giving our students greater opportunities to experience research as part of their medical studies.
It is well documented that students who are involved in quality research projects go on to land some of the most highly sought after and selective post-graduate clinical placements.
Within Striking Distance
The campaign to house UNECOM’s expanding research program began with the $1 million Pickus Challenge.
Thanks to the great generosity of so many within the UNECOM community, UNE met the Pickus challenge and is within reach of its goal to raise $6 million for the facility. Support has come from alumni, area physicians, osteopathic associations and society groups, the state of Maine, UNECOM's student government and alumni associations and from the faculty and staff.
Recently, we received a $1 million gift from longtime UNECOM faculty member, Peter Morgane, Ph.D., who also issued a $300,00 challenge to the UNECOM community which was met and exceeded, raising an additional $450,000 for the project.

In addition to Peter Morgane’s $1 million gift, he issued a challenge – if the UNECOM community contributed $300,000 by December 31, 2007, Dr. Morgane would increase his gift by an additional $300,000. We met and exceeded the challenge!
