Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center

marc_2The mission at Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center is threefold. First and foremost, the center provides comprehensive emergency treatment and follow-up rehabilitation services to sick and injured marine mammals and endangered sea turtles. To complement these services MARC also engages in research focused on improving treatment of marine animals and furthering the understanding of the marine environment. Through these activities, MARC provides and promotes experiential education opportunities for UNE students, children in grades K–12 and other members of the community and beyond.

Gifts in support of MARC help underwrite the cost of food, basic care, medicine, and medical procedures needed to rehabilitate and release these marine animals back into the wild. Support is also important for research conducted at the Center into marine mammal diseases and education about the importance of ocean health.  Find out more.

Athletics

Kelley-Paradis32The University of New England is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), which includes 447 member institutions. NCAA III institutions do not offer financial aid to students under the premise that its student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athletics and academics. Student-athletes are integrated into the student body, and they experience the full range of college life.

UNE President Danielle Ripich, Ph.D. believes co-curricular programs are central to the mission of the University for educating students and supporting the personal growth of all members of the University community. This belief is reflected in the University’s vision statement: Our athletics programs will achieve demonstrable success enriching the University and aiding in the recruitment, retention, and overall satisfaction of the student body. Integrity, hard work, initiative, accountability, balance, enterprising, commitment and pride are all values that UNE’s Athletics Department embraces and instills in its student-athletes.

There are many opportunities to support the No'easter's athletics programs.  Find out more.

Special Collections

MWWC_papersThe University of New England Department of Special Collections brings together unique, valuable, and educational Special Collections that jointly demonstrate the abiding cultural and professional interests of the University of New England and its supporters and alumni.

Currently, the five UNE special collections are:

  • The New England Osteopathic Heritage Center
  • The Westbrook College History Collection
  • The Maine Women Writers Collection
  • The University of New England Art Gallery
  • The George and Barbara Bush Legacy Collection

These Special Collections provide two major functions for the University:  (1) Historic preservation of vital historic collections relating to its history and special interests, and (2) Sites for educational outreach – such as exhibitions and lectures or presentations – into the surrounding community.

To discuss the donation of items or monetary support to the New England Osteopathic Heritage Center, the Westbrook College History Collection, the Maine Women Writers Collection, the University of New England Art Gallery or the George and Barbara Bush Legacy Collection, please contact William Chance, Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at  207-221-4372 or wchance@une.edu. Undergraduate Research

pam_w_studentsThe Undergraduate Summer Research program provides opportunities for students to work with faculty across UNE’s full spectrum of curriculum and discipline offerings.

Each summer approximately 60 students remain on campus to work with faculty in research related to their disciplines. The program provides modest stipends through the Dean’s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences to compensate students who would otherwise earn income from summer employment. At the conclusion of their work, students present the results of their research at an Under- graduate Summer Research Symposium.

Students often describe such primary active learning experiences as highlights of their college career and affirmations of their developing interests and purpose. These opportunities build students’ confidence and their awareness of what it takes to succeed outside the classroom.

Undergraduate Research at UNE fulfills three important educational objectives:

  • Serves as a culmination of the educational experience by enabling students to synthesize, apply and test acquired skills and knowledge in new ways
  • Provides opportunities to demonstrate students’ ability to speak and write about their own work
  • Prepares students for graduate school and professional careers

To find out more about how you can support undergraduate research at UNE, please contact William Chance, Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at  207-221-4372 or wchance@une.edu.  Find out more.
