Developmental Mathematics Adjunct Instructor

Basic Function

Instruct one section of developmental mathematics.

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain office hours and/or tutoring hours.
  • Refer students to other student support services as necessary, including tutorial support, writing support, learning specialist support, counseling services, career services, disabilities services, multicultural services and other campus resources.
  • Advise students on course selection in mathematics, consistent with their larger academic goals and abilities.
  •  Work with faculty members and LAS professionals to collaborate in the development of different pedagogical techniques.
  • Provide consultation to other LAS professionals and tutors as necessary.

Supervision Received

General direction regarding routine matters received from Developmental Mathematics Supervisor

Qualifications

Master’s degree in mathematics education or a related field, plus at least 2 years experience teaching or working in the area of academic support in a secondary or post-secondary setting, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Excellent teaching and motivational skills.
  • Ability to work with students individually, and in groups to adapt to individual learning styles.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including adult learners, students who are non-native speakers of English, students who are academically under-prepared, and students who receive accommodations for documented disabilities.
  • Ability to support and enhance the following learning skills and executive functions:  questioning and probing, problem solving, critical thinking, active listening, planning, organizing and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in curriculum/program development.
  • Ability to function collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff to provide an integrated approach to addressing learning assistance.
  • Knowledge of the use of technology in the classroom setting.
