Job Description

The Assistant Dean for Clinical Education (ADCE) is responsible for the personnel and administrative operations of the Office of Clinical Education and operations of the geographically dispersed COM clinical campus system.  Additionally the assistant dean is responsible to insure faculty development needs are met for the clinical campus system. The ADCA combines an array of academic and curricular oversight, management expertise, problem-solving skills, human resources experience, and financial acumen. The ADCE serves as a leader for COM, representing the College at various functions with the University and the external community, and serving in leadership roles in COM committees and activities.

Responsibilities

Administration:

  • to provide oversight of personnel and administrative operations of the office of clinical education
  • to promote the interests and welfare of the Office (faculty, staff, and students).
  •  to assist in the development and maintenance of clinical campuses for clerkship rotations,
    including site visit, annual plan, site visit schedule and communication/connection plan;
  •  to insure adequate faculty participation and development within the clinical campus system
  • to work collaboratively with affiliated clinical campuses/sites including OPTI and AHEC partners in the utilization of shared resources, faculty and administrative expertise.
  • to assist in the development and maintenance of postgraduate career planning and advising program for medical students
  • to provide oversight to the planning and execution of bi-annual meetings between the office of clinical education and the clinical campuses
  • to advise and monitor the scheduling of student rotations; 
  •  to monitor and address academic or disciplinary problems arising with third and fourth year medical students;
  • to prepare and execute the annual office budget
  • to oversee the evaluation system for the clinical campus system including student/faculty/site evaluation
  •  to supervise, review and disseminate annual reports and other documents regarding the functions of the clinical education office and clinical campus system

2. Academic

  • to maintain academic standards and quality within educational programs;
  • to work collaboratively with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for curricular integration across all four years of medical schools educational program
  • to oversee curricular content and incorporation clinical competencies
  • to supervise development and administration of end of service exams
  • to provide oversight in the development and implementation of computer-aided/web-based educational units
  • to pursue inter-clinical campus, inter-departmental and inter-college collaboration in educational and research programs with special focus on inter-professional 
  • To ensure the integration of osteopathic curriculum into core selective and elective rotations. 
  • To enhance performance and ensure success on high stakes standardized exams (i.e., COMLEX Level 2 CE and COMLEX PE)

 3. Faculty Development:

  • to recommend affiliate clinical faculty for appointment and promotion
  • to ensure faculty development needs are met within the clinical campus system
  • to assure CME availability in COM clinical faculty development programs
  • to promote clinical campus faculty participation in major student events (white coat, commencement and hooding ceremonies)
  • to promote and recommend clinical campus faculty to participate in programs offered by UNE such as Masters of Education Leadership and Masters of Public Health.

4. Research and Scholarly activity:

  • to promote research and scholarly activity in clinical education as may become feasible.
  • to actively seek external funding for research and scholarly needs as may become feasible.
  • to pursue programs of research development and other scholarly activity for the Department and the COM as may become feasible


5. Service to the College and University Community:

  • To serve as a faculty resource
  • To serve on committees of the COM at the discretion of the Dean.
  • To serve on University committees at the discretion of the President or Provost.
  • To demonstrate concern for society by being active in community affairs.
  • To serve as consultant to university and civic groups or individuals in areas of expertise.
  • To be active in regional and/or national professional organizations in your specialty or discipline.
  • To be active in regional and/or national professional organizations in your specialty or discipline

Special Projects

  • Other activities as assigned by the Dean.

Supervision Given

  • Clinical Coordinator and four full-time staff
  • Associate Dean of Educational Programs/Vice Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

 

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (or equivalent) in Education or related field, Board Certification in Specialty (if clinical).
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in medical education setting, preferably at the medical school level
  • In depth knowledge of adult educational theory and learning styles, assessment and evaluation.
  •  Excellent communications, interpersonal and presentation skills, and leadership qualities
  • Human resources experience, and financial acumen
  • Current and permanent legal rights to work in the U.S.
  •  Grant writing skills
