Biology Advising Coordinator
Basic Function:
The Biology Advising Coordinator is responsible to coordinate the academic advising of all 1st and 2nd year students in the Department of Biological Sciences and to provide consistent advising information acting as a resource to these students as well as students interested in pursuing graduate education in health professions and other fields of study. Serves as a resource for faculty regarding academic advising for upper division students.
Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:
>Primary
- Provide consistent academic advising for all 1st and 2nd year DBS majors.
- Work with faculty and upper-division students to provide information on graduate programs in biology, health professions, and other related fields.
- Be available to meet with students one-on-one and in groups for academic advising.
- Plan and schedule advising sessions for majors.
- Set-up advising folders annually for all incoming students in DBS.
- Maintain and update suggested course sequence information for all DBS majors distributing new information to those who need to know.
- Establishment and maintenance of electronic communication lists for first and second year students.
>Secondary
- Gather and analyze information on changes in student enrollment - changes of major, withdrawals, transfers, etc.
- Attend all new-student orientation sessions.
- Assist department advising liaison in recruitment of faculty to advise during orientation.
- Assist department chair with development of annual class schedule, work with chair to minimize schedule conflicts with heavily enrolled and required courses.
- Provide department faculty with updates regarding advisement of first and second year students.
- Assist with reviewing departmental webpage’s.
- Completes University new employee orientation and sexual harassment training within 30 days of the date of hire.
- Understands and complies with the University of New England Safety Manual.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
General supervision received from the Biological Sciences Departmental Chairperson.
Qualifications:
B. S. or B.A. degree in Biology or a related field, plus up to 3-4 years of relevant experience in customer service or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Capacity to work with and understand undergraduates
- Understanding of undergraduate curriculum
- Requirements for graduate school admission (professional and scientific programs)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience with record keeping
- Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
