Developmental Biologist
The University of New England invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track assistant professorship in the Department of Biological Sciences. Applicants will be expected to develop upper level courses in embryology and/or developmental biology that relate to human biology, as well as contribute to existing courses, and develop an active research program involving undergraduates and/or masters-level students. Areas of research emphasis are open, but may include established model systems such as Danio rerio, Drosophila melanogaster, and Caenorhabditis elegans and conceptual foci ranging from the evolution of development, to cell signaling and pattern formation, to developmental genetics. Individuals using modern techniques in cellular and molecular biology are particularly encouraged to apply. Requirements include a doctoral degree in a relevant field and evidence of teaching and research potential.
The Department of Biological Sciences (/cas/biological/) is the largest undergraduate department at the University with more than 600 students and 24 faculty. The majority of our students are in the marine sciences and pre-health fields. UNE Biology offers 4 majors (Aquaculture and Aquarium Science, Biology, Marine Biology, Medical Biology) and a fifth (Psychobiology), offered jointly with the Psychology Department. The Department also offers Master’s programs in Biological Science and Marine Science.
The Department has research collaborations with other units on campus including the departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences (/cas/) and the College of Osteopathic Medicine (/com/). The department occupies portions of three buildings on campus including the Marine Science Center and the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, both of which house teaching and research labs. A new combined Biology/Chemistry building is under construction. The University has a number of major equipment items that are shared among users. Tenure-track faculty are evaluated during year 3 (continued appointment) and year 6 (promotion and tenure). Criteria for tenure are teaching, scholarship and service.
Review of applications will begin October 1, 2008. Send electronic copies of CV, statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, and have 3 letters of recommendation forwarded t Ms. Isabelle Yokana at (Iyokana@une.edu). UNE is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and strongly encourages candidates of diverse backgrounds.
