Speaker Series
Paul Burlin, Ph.D., professor of history at the University of New England, spoke on "Empire and the American Way of Life" on Sept. 20, 2006 as part of UNE's Core Connections Lecture Series.
Sandra Gilbert, Ph.D., award-winning poet, memoirist and critic, spoke on "Modern Death, Millennial Mourning: The Challenge of Twenty-First Century Grief" on Monday April 2, 2007 at the University of New England. The lecture was co-sponsored by UNE's Maine Women Writers Collection, Department of English and the Women's Studies Program. She is M. H. Abrams Distinguished Visiting Professor of English at Cornell University and Distinguished Professor Emerita of English at the University of California, Davis.
Maine artist Robert Shetterly gave an artist's talk on Jan. 24, 2007 on Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of the University of New England's Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations. The talk was also held in conjunction with an exhibition of Shetterly's work "Americans Who Tell the Truth" on display at the UNE Art Gallery.
Writer Josh Pahigian, an adjunct faculty member, spoke about his writing as part of the University of New England's Authors and Notes series, highlighting UNE authors. Pahigian is is the author of five books: "The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip," "The Ultimate Minor League Baseball Road-Trip," "Spring Training Handbook," "Why I Hate the Yankees," and "The Red Sox in the Playoffs."
David Myers, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Hope College, spoke on "The Scientific Pursuit of Happiness" on Oct. 4, 2007 as part of the University of New England's Core Connections Lecture Series.
Darrin M. McMahon, Ph.D., Professor of History, Florida State University, spoke on "Pursuing Happiness Through the Ages: Some Thoughts on an Elusive Quest" on Sept. 17, 2007 as part of the University of New England's Core Connections Lecture Series.

George and Barbara Bush Center Groundbreaking
Former President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush and former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the George and Barbara Bush Center on the Biddeford campus Oct. 1, 2007. The ceremony’s program included a keynote address by former U.S. Air Force General Brent Scowcroft, who served as U.S. National Security Advisor under the 41st President.
