UNE Libraries' Policy on The Privacy of Library Records

1. The UNE Libraries observe state and federal laws regarding the disclosure of personal information in library records.

2. Confidential records include but are not limited to circulation records, registration records, reference requests, reference and Internet searches, and interlibrary loan requests.

3. The USA PATRIOT Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) expands the scope of inquiries by law enforcement into library records, but student, faculty, and staff rights to privacy and confidentiality remain unchanged.

4. In the event of a request for information about a faculty, student, or staff record from a federal, state, or local enforcement agency, library staff should contact the Vice President for Information Resources. The VP will request legal advice from the University's counsel. No action should be taken and no records released without the Vice President's authorization.
