OVID MEDLINE
Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE is widely recognized as the premier database source for biomedical literature, corresponding to three print indexes: Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature and International Nursing Index.
What Is the OVID MEDLINE Interface?
The OVID Interface is premium database search software accessible via the UNE Libraries homepage. MEDLINE is available from 1950+; it covers virtually every subject in the broad field of biomedicine, indexing articles from over 3,600 international journals.
Log-On Instructions:
• At the UNE Libraries homepage select a major such as Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant, etc.
• Within the alphabetical database listing, scroll down to MEDLINE; click on OVID MEDLINE. (If you are accessing OVID MEDLINE from off-campus, you will be prompted for your last name and 14-digit barcode from your UNE ID card.)
Steps To An OVID MEDLINE Search:
• Enter your keyword or phrase and click on Search.
Ex. hormone replacement therapy <Search>
• Your term is mapped to subject heading/s; select an appropriate subject heading (or choose Search As Keyword). Click on continue.
Ex. estrogen replacement therapy <Continue>
• Select Include All Subheadings (or choose from among the subheadings). Click on continue.
• Click on Complete Reference to view the entire record with abstract. Mark records desired by clicking on the box to the left of each citation.
• Use the Results Manager (to the left of the page) to display, email or save your records. To print records choose Print Preview, then click the Print button on the browser’s toolbar or click Print on the File menu.
• When available click on OVID Full Text or Full Text to print out full text articles.
• Click on Logoff to end your search session.
Searching Tips:
• Click on Ask A Librarian (at the top of the page) for assistance.
• Click on Limits to limit searches to English or publication year.
• Click on Additional Limits to limit by age group; publication type (e.g. MetaAnalysis, Clinical Trial, Randomized Controlled Trial); journal subsets (e.g. dentistry journals); Evidence Based Medicine Reviews (to obtain MEDLINE records that have an associated Cochrane, ACP, or DARE review); Clinical Queries (to retrieve clinically sound studies for therapy, diagnosis, prognosis, or etiology/harm).
• Click on Search History and then select searches to be combined. AND searches together to narrow; OR searches together to broaden.
• To perform author, article title and journal title searches, click on the appropriate phrase.
• Use Change Database to perform your search in a different OVID database.
• Local Print holdings are noted in red; electronic journal holdings may be checked within the UNE Libraries catalog.
