AltaVista - The best search engine for translating foreign language web sites. INFOMINE Scholarly Internet Resources - Internet search engine founded and maintained by University Librarians. Very selective, good for scholarly research.
Ask.com - The search results screen has many help sections, rather than just a list. It also has a well-organized image search. Scirus: Scientific Information - Science-specific search engine, searching a broad range of science web sites and university and government collections.
Google - the world's most famous search engine, but not the only one. Use the other search engines on this page along with Google for a more complete search of the web. You can use the advanced search option to narrow a search by domain, language and publication date. Wayback Machine Internet Archive - Specializes in providing access to 40 billions web pages archived since 1996. Good for access to "primary sources" from the web from a particular point in time.
Snap - Displays a preview of websites, before you click through to them. WWW Virtual Library - Oldest web catalog, founded by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of html format and the World Wide Web. Run by experts on a volunteer basis. Small database, but very knowledgeable and non-commercial.

Dogpile - Searches Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, Google and others. Excellent image search. UC Berkeley Internet Tutorials - Great site from the other coast, with tips and advice on how to get the most out of Internet search engines.
ixquick - Searches Altavista, Teoma, MSN, Netscape, Wisenut, Yahoo and more! One of the best image searches on the web.
Vivisimo - Gathers search results into very helpful "clusters" of similar sites. Searches MSN, Lycos, Wisenut, Jeeves and MSN, as well as options to search various new sites and commercial sites like eBay.
