The University of New England Maine Geriatric Education Center (UNE-MGEC) is one of several national Geriatric Education Centers funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The (UNE-MGEC) will partner with health systems and professional networks to develop, implement, disseminate and evaluate evidence-based best practice geriatric education, training, curricula and resources throughout Maine. (UNE-MGEC) will address priority health education needs of Maine’s health workforce, health professions faculty and students, community organizations and older adults and their families. Priorities of the (UNE-MGEC) include development of an Interdisciplinary Team Work Institute to train health professionals to care for patients with common and complex geriatric issues with a focus on depression and falls and the development of a Geriatric Health Literacy Initiative for health professionals.

Courses Offered

  • GEC-AARP - Observing and Addressing Financial and Material Exploitation of Older Adults
    Consisting of nine modules, this course was developed for health professionals, health professions faculty and students who want to have a better understanding of financial and material exploitation/abuse against older adults–whether committed by family members, friends, individuals in a position of trust, strangers or caregivers. Financial and material exploitation occurs when there is an illegal use of a vulnerable individual’s resources for another person’s profit or gain. Each module of this CME Course is approved for 1.5 Category 1B AOA, Category 1 AMA PRA Credits and UNE contact hours by the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
