This section of the UNE-MGEC web site is targeted specifically to health care professionals who work in the field of Geriatrics or are in training to do so.

The links and information presented here will be of interest to geriatric health care providers as well as to older adults and families.

Administration on Aging - A website designed to provide a comprehensive overview of a wide variety of topics, programs and services related to aging
 
  Adult Day Care - Looking for an alternative.  Just type in a location and click on the facility to see what is offered.  This is currently set up for Maine only.
   
  Aging With Dignity  - A privately-funded, non-profit organization that advocates for the needs of elders and their caregivers, with a particular emphasis on improving care for those at the end of life.
   
  Alzheimer's Association - Increase your understanding about the disease and find answers to commonly asked questions.  For 25 years, this donor-supported, not-for-profit organization has been dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s, and has provided reliable information and care consultation; created supportive services for families; increased funding for dementia research; and influenced public policy changes.

American Health Assistance Foundation - a nonprofit charitable organization that has dedicated over 30 years to funding research on age-related and degenerative diseases, educating the public about these diseases, and providing emergency financial assistance to Alzheimer's disease patients and their caregivers.
   
  American Pharmaceutical Association - Patient oriented information and/or handouts.
   
  The American Society on Aging has created strategies and materials to enhance the capacity of national, state and local organizations in serving the health promotion and disease prevention needs of older adults. Funded through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these strategies and materials are designed to increase understanding of the changing health and social service needs of an aging and more diverse population. The strategies provide tools for professionals in stand-alone modules available for free on the Internet. Each module is designed to complement existing health promotion programs.
   
  Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) - The  goal of decentralizing health professions educational training in order to improve the distribution, supply, quality utilization, and efficiency of health care personnel.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services - Formerly known as the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), CMS is the federal agency responsible for administering the Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance), HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), and several other health-related programs.
 
Children of Aging Parents - a nonprofit, charitable organization whose mission is to assist the nation's nearly 54 million caregivers of the elderly or chronically ill with reliable information, referrals and support, and to heighten public awareness that the health of the family caregivers is essential to ensure quality care of the nation's growing elderly population.

  CyberSeniors.org - Is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting seniors to the world at their fingertips. They are based in Portland, Maine.

Elder Abuse Institute of Maine - An integrated and comprehensive community system to meet the needs of elder abuse victims, including older victims of domestic violence in Maine.
 
ElderCare Online - for people caring for aging loved ones. Whether you are caring for a spouse, parent, relative or neighbor, we are committed to providing an online community where supportive peers and professionals help you improve quality of life for yourself and your elder.
 
Eldercare Locator - a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging which connects older Americans and their caregivers with sources of information on senior services. The service links those who need assistance with state and local area agencies on aging and community-based organizations that serve older adults and their caregivers.
 
Elderhostel - Elderhostel is a nonprofit organization providing educational adventures all over the world to adults aged 55 and over.
   
  Eden Alternative - To improve the well-being of elders and those who care for them by transforming the communities in which they live and work.
   
  Elders and Families - Information for older persons and families.
 
Ethnic Elders Care Network - a site designed specifically for people who are currently or will be caregivers to ethnic elders with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
 
Family Caregiver Alliance - the first community-based nonprofit organization in the country to address the needs of families and friends providing long-term care at home. FCA  now offers programs at national, state and local levels to support and sustain caregivers.
   
GriefNet - A system that can connect you with a variety of resources related to death, dying, bereavement, and major emotional and physical losses.

  Healthword  - is a monthly e-mail newsletter produced by the American Society on Aging’s Live Well, Live Long project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Live Well, Live Long provides education and resources to professionals in the field of aging to help them improve health promotion and disease prevention efforts aimed at older adults. Current and past issues of this newsletter are available on the Live Well, Live Long website.

  Local Area Agencies on AgingArea Agencies on Aging are the central resource for elder services in your area.
 
MealCall.org - founded by volunteers to help people find local senior meal programs, help local meal programs recruit volunteers, and to help businesses develop corporate sponsorship and volunteer programs for senior meal programs.
 
  Medicare - the official US Government Medicare Information Site; includes Medicare Compare, a database of managed care plans and the Medicare & You 2000 booklet.
   
  Medicare Rights Center - the largest independent source of health care information and assistance in the United States for people with Medicare. Founded in 1989, MRC helps older adults and people with disabilities get good, affordable health care.
 
Myziva.net - provides an easy to use Complete Nursing Home Guide for consumers, healthcare professionals and other advocates to evaluate and compare Nursing Homes, understand the services that a Nursing Home provides, and with information on how one pays for Nursing Home care.
 
National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys - a non-profit association that assists lawyers, bar organizations and others who work with older clients and their families. Established in 1987, the Academy provides a resource of information, education, networking and assistance to those who deal with the many specialized issues involved with legal services to the elderly and people with special needs.
   
National Alliance of Caregivers - Caregiver tips.
 
National Alliance on Mentally Illness - the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness and their families. Founded in 1979, NAMI has become the nation’s voice on mental illness, a national organization including NAMI organizations in every state and in over 1100 local communities across the country who join together to meet the NAMI mission through advocacy, research, support, and education.
 
National Center for Assisted Living - the assisted living voice of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), the nation’s largest organization representing long term care providers.  Serving the assisted living profession with consumer education, networking opportunities, public affairs, professional development and a respected voice in public policy advocacy.
 
National Center on Elder Abuse - a national resource for elder rights, law enforcement and legal professionals, public policy leaders, researchers, and the public. The Center’s mission is to promote understanding, knowledge sharing, and action on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
   
  National Center on Women & Aging - Newsletter for midlife and older women.
 
National Council on the Aging - a national network of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the health and independence of older persons and increasing their continuing contributions to communities, society and future generations.
   
  National Institute on Aging - Devoted to improving the health of older people.
 
National PACE Association - Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (known as PACE) are innovative because they provide continuous care and services offering individuals eligible for nursing home care the option of continuing to live in the community.
   
  National Senior Citizens Law Center  - Advocates nationwide to promote the independence and well-being of low-income elderly individuals, as well as persons with disabilities, with particular emphasis on women and racial and ethnic minorities.

  Southern Maine Agency on Aging - The Mission of the Southern Maine Agency on Aging is to assure that older people living in Southern Maine, especially those who are frail, living alone, or have low incomes, receive the support necessary to maintain their independence in the community.
   
  Together RX Access Card Program (The) - This program is scheduled to begin in February of 2005. It will provide savings of 25 to 40 percent off on the retail price of more than 275 band name prescription drugs offered by sponsoring pharmaceutical companies. Eligibility criteria includes: legal U.S. residency, under 65 years of age, ineligible for Medicare, and having no public or private insurance coverage for drug benefits. Income must be less than $30,000 if single, and less than $60,000 for a family of four. Information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling (800) 444-4106, or at the above linked website.
