Alzheimer's Supplemental Funds Award
UNE Maine Geriatric Education Center Educational Training Programs: “ Preparing for the Future: Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias”

In July of 2012, the UNE-Maine Geriatric Education Center (UNE-MGEC) directed by Judith A. Metcalf, APRN, BC, MS, received a supplemental funds award under the Geriatric Education Centers Program Supplemental Opportunity to provide continuing education to health professionals on Alzheimer’s Disease. The supplemental funds were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant # UB4HP19207.

On March 13, 2013 the UNE-MGEC held the first of five state-wide educational trainings for health professionals in Maine: “Preparing for the Future: Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias” at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport, Maine. On June 15, 2013 the second training was held at the Bar Harbor Club in Bar Harbor, Maine. Approximately 168 health professionals have participated in these trainings thus far. The next program is June 14, 2014.

The UNE-MGEC training program agenda includes the following topics:

  • Using the Triple Aim to Provide Affordable, Accessible, and Quality Care for Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Guidelines for Clinical Practice
  • Models of Team Care Coordination for Office Practices
  • Pharmacological Management of Agitation in Dementia
  • Early Onset Dementia in Intellectual Disability Diagnosis and Management
  • Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation (EIFFE)
  • For Providers- Important Questions to Address and Resources to Refer to Patients and Families
  • Latest in Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trials and How to Refer Patients
  • Skills Stations for Effective Geriatric Screening for Office Practices
  • Health Literacy
  • Advance Care Planning through End of Life Care

These trainings are free of charge and CME credits are available for a fee of $25. Please see Continuing Medical Education for information on how to register for future training opportunities.
