Academic Conferences

The Maine Women Writers Collection hosts an academic conference every three years. Beginning in the 1970s with the series of programs under the title "A Goodly Heritage," MWWC Academic Conferences have focused on individual writers such as Sarah Orne Jewett, May Sarton, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and on themes such as nature writers, private writing, women's friendships, and women's health.

The next conference, to be held June 12-13, 2009, will be a symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the MWWC. The working title is "Women in the Archive: Using Archival Collections in Research and Teaching on U.S. Women."
