Creative Writing Workshops

Gathering of Writers
is a series of workshops hosted by the Maine Women Writers Collection, in the Abplanalp Library on the Portland Campus of the University of New England.

Inspired by the heritage of Maine women writers such as May Sarton, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Sarah Orne Jewett, the focus of this series will be on creating a supportive community of writers as we explore craft from all angles.  Through discussion, modeling, prompts, and time for writing and sharing, we will foster the development of each writer's own unique voice.

The Gathering is open to all community members, no matter your level of experience as a writer.

Each workshop focuses on a different aspect of the creative writing craft, from setting to dialogue to point of  view.  Each workshop begins with a discussion of craft, including an examination of how a number of writers have mastered that aspect of writing.

Then students are given a prompt (which they are free to follow or not in any manner they wish), and they write for between 45 minutes and an hour. All genres of writing are welcome, from haiku to memoir to short story, from the first beginnings of a mystery to the climax of an epic poem.

After a brief break, workshop participants have an opportunity to read their work aloud. Since what they have written is first-draft material, discussion focuses on giving only positive feedback, so that each writer is encouraged to discover the strength of his or her writing.  At the end of each class, the facilitator summarizes the session and gives some general constructive criticism.

The goal of these workshops is to provide participants with the time and space to work on their craft, explore the stories they want to tell, and find a supportive community in which to find their voices and share their stories.
