ORR'S ISLAND
Artists' Books 1. Blue Moon (April 2000) 23 x 37 cm. Original text, acrylic ink paintings on layered transparent and sheer papers. The text relates to the artist's sadness about losing natural rhythms in her life and discovery of new daily rhythms.
2. Dark Room Days (April 1999) 9 x 8 cm. Artist's black and white photo fragments and original handwritten text about the artist's depression.
3. Diagnosis (August 2000) 24 x 30 cm. Handmade paper with drawings from the artist's sketchbook, referring to the lines of pain, charts, medical monitors, and changes in the artist's emotional state during diagnosis for breast cancer.
4. I Make Books 30 x 58 cm. Oversize concertina binding, with pastepapers made by the artist. Text refers to the artist's emotional/healing reasons for making books (the last line is "I make books so I will not die.")
5. It's Nothing (December 1999) 23 x 16. Handwritten original text on transparent pages, alternated with acrylic painting on heavy pages. Text describes doctors' responses to the artist's reports of pain, which turned out to be accurate indications of spreading cancer.
6. Tattoo (November 1998) 12 x 11 cm. Original text deals with the artist's changing attitudes and experiences with tattoos. Rubber stamped images, computer printed text and paste paper.
7. Tests (Winter 1998-9) 19 x 14 cm. Original poem describes the artist's emotions of anger, fear in dealing with repeated tests and cancer treatments. Original artwork is interpretive of x-ray imaging.
8. Voices: Five Doctors Speak (April 2001) 16 x 23 cm. Original text, computer printed on a variety of papers documenting what five doctors each said to the artist when telling her about her second recurrence of breast cancer over a six day period.
9. The Rest of My Life II(October 2000 - Otober 2002)11 x 7 x 5 cm. Handmade box covered in color Xerox copies of the artist’s planning calendar holds a long accordion with original paste covers. The accordion segments are the actual doctor’s appointment cards for one year of cancer treatments, October 30, 2000-October 2001. Also included are brown envelopes that contained medication, which were given to the artist before chemotherapy treatments. There are two simultaneous texts in addition to the appointment dates and calendar pages: notes on everyday events made during treatment; and, a history of the past ten years of the artist’s life with cancer in red pen. The book can be opened from either end.
10. Prescriptions(January 2003) 27 x 21.5cm. The book is enclosed in hand-made box which is covered in orange silk. The computer printed pages are printed on vellum. The images are collages of prescriptions, pills, and medicine bottles. The text questions the amounts and side effects of drugs in cancer treatment.
11. What You Don't Want to Know About Breast Cancer(February 2003)22 x 14 x 2.5cm. Concertina with hard covers. Altered book with black and white Xerox copies of cover and pages from a National Cancer Institute booklet titled “What You Need to Know About Breast Cancer”.
