David Livingstone Smith, Director teaches philosophy at the University of New England. He earned his M.A. from Antioch University and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of London, Kings College, where he worked on topics in the philosophy of mind and psychology. David's books include Freud's Philosophy of the Unconscious (Kluwer, 1999), Approaching Psychoanalysis: An Introductory Course (Karnac, 1999), Psychoanalysis in Focus (Sage, 2002), Why We Lie: The Evolutionary Roots of Deception and the Unconscious Mind (St. Martins Press, 2004), and The Most Dangerous Animal: Human Nature and the Origins of War ( St. Martins Press 2007). His most recent book is Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others (St. Martin's Press 2011)

Leslie Marsh, Assistant Director comes to the NEI as someone with a parallel life in the business world (including non-profits) and the academic world. With his managerial hat on he is the point person for communications and marketing in addition to his working on strategy, organizational, and developmental matters for the NEI. Leslie's substantive academic interest is centered at the confluence of neurophilosophy and social theory - sociocognition - with a highly specialized interest in stigmergic cognition.
