Are you interested in learning how to sea kayak, in having an incredible overnight island adventure, and in making new friends? If so, check out our Trailblazer Rippleffect program.
This is an entry-level, three-day (two overnights) outdoor learning experience presented in partnership with Rippleffect that focuses on life at UNE. UNE's Trailblazer Guides greet you on campus and then transport you to Portland where you will join trained Rippleffect staff. You ride the ferry out to scenic Cow Island in historic Casco Bay where you spend two nights. Cow Island is a unique setting with multiple options for outdoor activities. During this trip, you do entry-level sea kayaking around Cow Island, ride a 400-foot zip line, climb on a climbing wall, and bond with other incoming UNE students around the campfire each night. The first session includes an overnight paddling trip to a nearby island. You work together to prepare meals and carry out community chores. Trailblazer Guides, who are UNE students themselves, lead discussions on adjusting to every aspect of life at UNE, and serve as friendly campus resources. You should be comfortable around water and in outdoor situations, but no kayaking or camping experience is required. Rippleffect provides all sea kayaking gear, and offers other gear available for loan. You should be sure to pack according to the gear list. After the trip, you return to UNE, and begin a traditional campus-based orientation.
