UNE Maine Women Writers Collection's website highlights holdings of more than 50 'Featured Writers'

The University of New England's Maine Women Writers Collection recently created a new section on its website that highlights significant holdings of "Featured Writers" in the collection.

Cally Gurley, curator of the Maine Women Writers Collection (MWWC), explained that the website now features the work of more than 50 writers with an individual author page that provides biographical information and a description of the materials in the Collection, as well as an index to the writer‚Äôs works held by the Collection.

This information, compiled by the MWWC staff, qualifies as a primary research site that can be used by faculty and students alike, as well as the many scholars whom the MWWC serves nationally.

The authors featured were chosen either:

  • because the collection's holdings related to the author are of significant volume and depth that they merit a detailed listing and descriptive information, or
  • because certain writers are quite well known and their history and biographical information are significant, even though the MWWC's collection of unique materials on the author may not be of great depth.

"By making this information available on our website," Gurley explained, "we are expanding our mission to document, preserve and publicize the lives and writing of both well-known and obscure Maine women writers; as well as provide a unique research resource, created within the University, for the benefit of students, faculty, and staff. "

The Collection
The Maine Women Writers Collection at the Abplanalp Library on the Westbrook College Campus of the University of New England is a pre-eminent special collection of published and non-published literary, cultural and social history sources, by and about women authors, either native or residents of Maine. These sources document and illustrate the times, circumstances and experiences of Maine women writers, revealing their public actions and private thoughts.
