Society for Neuroscience approves new Maine state chapter

The council of the Society for Neuroscience has formally approved the establishment of a Maine chapter.

Marie Hayes, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Maine, senior scientist at the Maine Institute of Human Genetics & Health and a member of the University of New England's Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, led the efforts to establish the chapter.

According to Dr. Hayes, the initiative will help connect the neuroscience community in Maine by promoting collaboration and the sharing of scientific information. The society affiliation will also be extremely useful in helping educate the public about the neurosciences though K-12 outreach and the promotion of the annual Brain Awareness Week.

Edward Bilsky, Ph.D., director of UNE's Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, adds, "We are very excited to be a part of this preeminent organization and to have so many colleges, universities and research institutions in Maine that have expertise in this exciting field."

The Society for Neuroscience has over 40,000 members and 100 regional chapters in North America, along with an expanding number of international programs. Students and faculty will also be able to take advantage of more funding opportunities for travel and lectures through the society's extensive selection of chapter grants and awards.
