Coastal Journal covers Camden Conference lecture by Anouar Majid on 'Why America Matters'

A Nov. 30, 2011 lecture titled “Why America Matters” delivered at the Rockport Opera House by Anouar Majid, Ph.D., UNE director of the Center for Global Humanities and associate provost for Global Initiatives, was covered at length by the Coastal Journal (Bath).

The lecture was one in a series leading up to the 25th annual Camden Conference “The US in a 21st Century World: Do we have what it takes?” which will run February 17 through February 19.

The Coastal Journal reported that Majid praised America’s strengths and commented on the underlying complications facing U.S. and Middle East relations.

Majid talked about the decline of the American economy and what he thinks lies behind it, later remarking on a popular sentiment, that America is no longer what it used to be. “The question is, if America were to really decline,” he said, “What would happen to the world we see?”

Majid is the author of four critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West, including We Are All Moors: Ending Centuries of Crusades against Muslims and Other Minorities. His latest book ,Islam and America: Building a Future without Prejudice, is scheduled for release later this month.
