UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine announces Eastern Connecticut Health Network partnership

The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) announces a collaborative partnership with Eastern Connecticut Health Network, based in Manchester, Conn.

Under the partnership, 16 third-year medical students from the College of Osteopathic Medicine will join Rockville General (based in Vernon, Conn.) and Manchester Memorial hospitals in July 2011 for a year of clinical and academic training.

The UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine currently has 10 core clinical campuses with 18 training facilities.  ECHN becomes the medical school's first training partner in Connecticut.  UNECOM students currently train in locations throughout the Northeast at hospitals and medical systems in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

The students will rotate through medical specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, behavioral health, surgery and community health.

"This collaboration creates a full medical school affiliation that provides a core clinical campus together with faculty appointments for ECHN medical staff members that are invaluable for UNECOM," states Marc. B. Hahn, DO, dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and senior vice president for health affairs.  He adds, "This partnership extends our already impressive reach in educating and placing our medical students with some of the finest doctors in New England."

Since its founding in 1978, UNECOM has graduated more than 2,500 physician alumni. Of all licensed physicians in Maine, more have graduated from the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine than any other medical school in the world.  UNE's commitment to the education of primary care physicians is unmatched by any other medical school in New England.

U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked UNE as one of the "Best Universities" in the Northeast offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.  The UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine is  ranked 7th out of all 146 MD and DO granting medical schools in the United States for the number of graduates entering primary care training, and in the top 20 for geriatrics in U.S. News' peer-assessment ranking.
