Anouar Majid featured as columnist in 'Portland Press Herald' political series

Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and director of the Center for Global Humanities, shared his thoughts on American politics in a new opinion series in the Portland Press Herald featuring writers not affiliated with a major party.

In the column, Majid weighed in on the two-party political system and how it differs from other democratic nations. “The outcome of elections in the United States is, however, a zero-sum game.,” stated Majid. “Those with the most votes win. It is not so in multiparty democracies, where parliaments and assemblies are made up of various parties covering the whole ideological spectrum."

Majid wrote that the current system muffles the voices of leaders like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Ralph Nader. According to Majid, a nation with such a wide variety of perspectives should be represented by more than two parties. “Such voices would indicate that we are a nation of independent thinkers, inspired by the grand principles of the Revolution that created the modern political system, not beholden to narrow partisan interests or affiliations.”
