David Livingstone Smith quoted in article on lying

David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, was quoted in an article titled "Why Those Little White Lies Do More Damage Than You Think," which was picked up by several media outlets, including the website Greatest.com in its March 23, 2015 post.

The article discussed why people lie, the frequency with which people lie, the differing magnitudes of lies, and the ways in which liars’ mental health is adversely affected by lying.

The article also points out that lying, to some degree, is a necessary part of culture. Smith stated, "There’s something antisocial about being too honest. Part of becoming socialized is learning how to lie in expected and acceptable ways.  If you aren’t capable of concealing truth, you’re not going to thrive in human society."
