James Sulikowski comments on large group of sharks spotted in Sussex, England, in 'The Dodo' article
James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor of Marine Science, was interviewed for an article that was published on July 17, 2015, in The Dodo, an online publication about animals.
Sulikowski commented on the recent sighting of a cluster of 50 sharks in the shallow coastal waters of Sussex, England. He identified the sharks as starry smooth hound sharks, and he noted that a large group of them together in shallow water is not uncommon.
“The starry smooth hound will aggregate in large numbers, typically to feed, so seeing large numbers of this shark species close to shore is completely normal,” he stated.
Sulikowski added that since the species’ teeth are designed for crushing prey, rather than tearing flesh, they are not dangerous to humans.
