James Sulikowski featured on 'CTV' for shark expertise
James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, appeared on Canadian television station, CTV, to share his expertise on the latest shark attack in North Carolina.
In the interview, Sulikowsi listed several factors that could be contributing to the recent increase in reported shark attacks, including warmer water, a greater presence of bait-fish and elevated saline levels.
Sulikowski also explained that sharks can often become confused by humans splashing in the water, mistaking them for prey. “You’ve got lots of people splashing in the water,” he commented. “Their senses draw them in to those cues and what happens is a case of mistaken identity. The shark lashes out and bites, and for the most part, it lets go.”
He concluded the interview by assuring the public that although North Carolina is experiencing more shark interactions than in years past, the encounters are still considered uncommon.
The CTV appearance follows several media interviews for Sulikowski, who was cited as a shark expert in interviews with Bangor Daily News, Portland Press Herald, WCSH, WGME, WMTW and WVOM.
