Richard LaRue gives competitive presentation at Society for Health and Physical Education

Richard J. LaRue, D.P.E., professor in the Sport and Recreation Management program in the Department of Business, recently delivered a competitive presentation at the Society for Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) America, Eastern District Conference in Springfield, Massachusetts. His talk, "Security and Risk Management in Athletic and Recreational Programming and Venues," was based in part on his experiences serving as a security guard for Guardsmark™ at the General Dynamics weapons manufacturing plant in Saco, Maine.

LaRue explained why he applied for a security position: "I have always been passionate about safety and risk management related to sport and physical activity.  However, to better understand best practices in safety and security, I needed to experience firsthand how a multi-million dollar weapons manufacturing plant can be kept secure with only two or three officers on duty per shift.  The selection and implementation of a range of technologies is the key!  I was introduced to tools that can be appropriately applied to Sport and Recreational programs and venues, better ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all concerned."

LaRue will travel to Seattle, Washington this month, where he will serve on a panel, titled "Athletic Facility Design and Planning: Ask the Experts," at the SHAPE American National Convention. The purpose of the panel is to provide attendees with a forum where they may inquire about issues relating to the planning, design and modification of athletic facilities and venues.
