UNE Marine Science survey cited in report on health of Atlantic menhaden species

A recent aerial survey conducted by faculty in the Department of Marine Sciences was cited in an April 1, 2015 report compiled by the Menhaden Fisheries Coalition that confirms that the Atlantic menhaden species is healthy, wide-ranging and sustainably managed.

The report, titled "Coast-wide sightings of large schools of Atlantic menhaden support 2014 stock assessment methods, findings," notes that the UNE study "recorded large numbers of the fish in waters around New York and New England areas that are considered to be within the species’ northern range."

According to the report, this portion of the menhaden population, whose existence was verified by the UNE survey, is only just now being considered in the assessment of the stock. "Previously, and perplexingly," the report states, "these fish weren’t counted."
