Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and director of the Center for Global Humanities, was recently invited to give presentations at the University of Florida and Duke University.

On October 1, Majid presented as part of a conference “Islam and Encounters with Secularism: Futural Openings?” which was hosted by the University of Florida’s Center for Global Islamic Studies. In his presentation, titled “Secularism and the Dilemma of Faith,” Majid argued that secular thought relies on scientific or critical analysis, whereas faith is based on blind trust. He asked how one is to make sense of Islam when there is no historical evidence to substantiate it. Rethinking the idea of Islam, he contended, is, indispensable to any future of coexistence and human solidarity.

Majid gave another talk on October 21 at Duke University’s Interregional Conference, titled “Middle East in Latin America,” a symposium exploring Arab and Middle Eastern communities in Latin America.

In his opening presentation, “We Are All Moors,” Majid told the story of the process of writing the book We Are All Moors, which he published in 2009, and which is now considered foundational in the emerging  field  that examines the nexus of Islam, Spain, and the Americas.
