Michael Burman, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the K-12 Outreach program in the University of New England Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, was recently quoted in a Portland Press Herald article about traumatic brain injuries.

The article, titled, “Brain works in mysterious ways and science tries to keep up,” focused on how the brain responds to trauma and the work scientists are doing to better understand and treat injuries. It accompanied an in-depth report about Taylor Norcross, who suffered a severe head injury in a moose-car collision and has experienced an impressive recovery.

“If you break your wrist, we can tell you what’s going to happen and how long it’s going to take to recover. But predicting what damage to the brain has been done and what the recovery is going to look like is very imprecise. We don’t understand the brain that well to be able to do that,” Burman said.
