Noah Perlut to speak at Shelburne Farms on farming strategies to preserve grassland birds

Noah Perlut, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, will give a talk about grassland birds at Shelburne Farms in Vermont on June 14, 2016. His presentation is titled “Community Farming and Grassland Birds: A Local Conservation Strategy.”

According to Perlut, bobolinks and Savannah sparrows return to their place of birth to breed. As a result, Perlut, who has studied the two species extensively in the Shelburne Farms area, has been able to track the family stories of many bobolinks and Savannah sparrows and, consequently, can  tell their unique stories.

Perlut will discuss how the timing and intensity of haying and grazing affect the birds and how management opportunities among Vermont’s farming and landowner community can balance bird and farmer needs. He hopes that educating farmers and landowners about the family stories of bobolinks and Savannah sparrows will encourage them to adopt practices that are beneficial to the birds’ survival.
