UNE shines as international occupational scientists gather in Maine

The Society for the Study of Occupation (SSO) gathered with the Canadian Society of Occupational Scientists (CSOS) for the third Joint Research Conference in Portland, Maine September 28-October 1, 2016. The University of New England sponsored the opening reception under the leadership of Westbrook College of Health Professions Dean Elizabeth Francis Connolly, Ph.D., and UNE student and faculty research was showcased throughout the conference.

Caryn Husman, M.S., O.T.R./L., director of the Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies (HWOS) program and Caroline Beals, M.S., O.T.R./L., assistant professor, gave a presentation titled, “Design, the built environment, and pedagogy: The interaction occurring through occupation of active learning.”

Jan Froehlich, M.S., O.T.R./L., associate professor of Occupational Therapy and Elizabeth Crampsey, M.S., O.T.R./L., BCPR, assistant clinical professor, presented a poster titled, “Playfulness and the practitioner.” This poster presented research completed by 2016 graduate students in Occupational Therapy Rachel Finer, Danielle LaVere, Erin Schwenke, and Cinder Savage.

Occupational Therapy Department Director Kristin Winston, was on the planning committee for the event along with Husman. Francis Connolly is a leader with the Society and has contributed significant research around the occupation of mothering. Kathryn Loukas, O.T.D., M.S., O.T.R./L., FAOTA, clinical professor, attended the conference and Judith Kimball, Ph.D., O.T.R./L., FAOTA, participated in the banquet event.
