The run down on UNE at Beach to Beacon 10k road race 2017

Members of the UNE community at the Beach to Beacon race

UNE was proud to be one of the many sponsors of the 2017 Beach to Beacon 10K road race in Cape Elizabeth, which was held on Saturday, August 5. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of the race by Olympic Gold Medalist and Mainer Joan Benoit Samuelson.

Several members of the UNE community ran the race, including President James Herbert, who placed 55th in his division. Other faculty and staff runners included Mike Sheldon, Josh Pahigian, Angela Coulombe, Patty Williams, Charles Tilburg, Cindy Juskiewicz, Chris Frothingham, Doug Spicer, Kristen Quatrano, Kayla Frank, and Sarah Wissler. Many UNE students and alumni participated as well.

In addition, several students who are enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program volunteered at the race in various support positions, including in the medical tent, where their services were critically important. The students worked collaboratively to address approximately 30 cases of heat illnesses among the runners, including a very serious case in first place finisher Jesse Orach, whose core temperature had reached a dangerous 107.3 degrees. Orach was helped across the finish line by runner-up Robert Gomez.

Herbert extended his thanks to all student volunteers and congratulated all UNE runners after the race.
