UNE College of Dental Medicine announces Richard Valachovic, president of ADEA, as inaugural hooding ceremony speaker

Richard W. Valachovic, D.M.D., M.P.H., has been invited to speak at the UNE College of Dental Medicine’s first ever hooding ceremony. Valachovic is president and CEO of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and president of the ADEAGies Foundation.

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is the voice of dental education. Its members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and many allied and postdoctoral dental education programs, corporations, faculty and students. Valachovic joined ADEA in 1997 after more than 20 years in the research, practice and teaching of pediatric dentistry and oral medicine/radiology.

Certified in pediatric dentistry and dental public health, Valachovic is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, and a fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. He previously served on the faculty of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. Valachovic has served as president of the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) and as secretary-general of the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations (IFDEA).

Valachovic received a B.S. degree from St. Lawrence University, the D.M.D. degree from the University of Connecticut, and the M.P.H. and M.Sc. (Health Policy and Management) degrees from Harvard University. He completed postdoctoral programs in pediatric dentistry and dental public health. He is also a board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist and a past president of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Prior to joining the Association, Dr. Valachovic's career was as a full-time educator and funded researcher at the University of Connecticut and Harvard University.

The College of Dental Medicine's inaugural hooding ceremony and reception will take place at 3:30 p.m. on May 20. Graduates of the program will receive their academic hoods, signifying entry into the profession.
