UNE School of Social Work hosts forum on Medicaid expansion

Robyn Merrill speaks at the UNE forum on Medicaid reform

The University of New England School of Social Work hosted a forum about Question 2 on the statewide ballot November 7, which will ask voters if they want to expand Medicaid in Maine.

Robyn Merrill, M.S.W. ’04, executive director of Maine Equal Justice Partners and Michael Brennan, M.S.W. ’94, former chair of the Blue Ribbon Commission on MaineCare and former chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, delivered remarks about their efforts in support of Medicaid expansion. They explained the history of the MaineCare program, the process of getting this referendum question on the ballot and the potential economic impacts if it passes.

Following those remarks, Professor Thomas McLaughlin, M.S.W., Ph.D., moderated a discussion with members of the audience. Brennan and Merrill answered questions about why the opposition argues against Medicaid expansion and what happens if the Affordable Care Act is repealed.
