Cathrine O. Frank, Ph.D., professor of English, presented at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and the Humanities, which was held March 16-17 at the Georgetown University Law Center.

In a paper called “Anthony Trollope and the Law of Libel: Contesting Character in the Courts, the Press, and the Novel,” Frank linked the 19th century British author’s method of character development to parliamentary efforts to draft new libel legislation and court decisions that expanded freedom of the press. Frank’s paper is part of her current book-length study, Character: Writing and Reputation in Victorian Law and Literature.
